Given the choice, would you rather shoot on film or DV?

I used to be a traditionalist and said I would never shoot on DV, but I've been converted.

DV is definitely the future of film-making, it just makes everything so much easier - and cheaper.

Lucas was the pioneer of Digital film-making by making big-budget mainstream movies (i.e. the horrible new Star Wars films), but since he's a corporate whore suckling on the devil's teat, we'll ignore him.

Robert Rodriguez on the other hand, has embraced high definition DV in a more positive way. He keeps costs down, works more quickly and more fluidly, and most importantly, his films look GOOD. Watching the recent Mariachi Trilogy DVD, I was amazed to see Rodriguez had assembled basically a whole film studio in his garage, allowing him to edit, score, mix and create special effects from his own home.

My only main beef with DV was the quality of the image, but this has improved over the past few years. Michael Mann has just made "Collateral" using DV, and you'd never know it. It looks like film.

Even at the lower end, DV looks good. More importantly, it has now liberated low-budget and amateur film-makers, to the point where anyone can make their own feature film for very little money.

What used to be a closed industry is (albeit slowly) being infiltrated by visionaries who previously had no access to the medium on a professional scale.

Yes, DV film-makers can make shit just like the old-schoolers, but at least now they have the CHANCE to make their mark. And because DV is cheap, they can hone their craft time and time again until they reach a level where they are ready to take a stab at the big time.

And that can only be a good thing.

Basic Instinct 2 should be shot on sight. Yet another sequel no-one asked for.
